Texas License to Carry (LTC) Class

✅ What This Class Covers
This in-person class includes both the required classroom instruction and range proficiency demonstration needed to apply for your Texas License to Carry. Upon completion, you’ll receive a Certificate of Training to submit to DPS in your LTC application process.
📌 Prerequisites
This is not a beginner handgun class. You must:
- Be able to operate your firearm independently
- Load your magazines without help
- Clear basic malfunctions on your own
- Demonstrate competence and confidence in safe gun handling
If you’re new to firearms, please complete basic handgun training before attending this LTC class.
🧾 What to Bring
- Texas Driver’s License or valid photo ID
- Handgun of your choice (must arrive in a bag or case). Rentals available at no charge (ammo is extra fee)
- Ammunition: 50 rounds (available for purchase if needed)
- Eye & Ear Protection (loaners available but always better to have your own safety equipment)
- Closed-toe shoes required (no sandals or flip-flops)
- Snacks & Beverages (working lunch – bring your own)

Bring completed: Questionnaire, Range Rules, and Insurance Waiver – or arrive complete on-site
🧠 Classroom Topics
- Module 1 (2 hrs): Laws on weapons & use of deadly force
- Module 2 (1 hr): Handgun use, safety & secure carry practices
- Module 3 (45 min): Non-violent dispute resolution
- Module 4 (45 min): Safe storage, especially for child safety
- Range Fundamentals (1 hr): Classroom discussion of malfunctions, recoil management, marksmanship (not beginner training)
- Written Test: 25 multiple-choice & true/false questions (70% to pass – just pay attention!)
- Brief presentation by Right to Bear: Legal defense for self defense and to offer perks to those who sign up for the membership program in class.
🎯 Range Qualification
We follow the official Texas DPS course of fire.
- While 9mm is the most common caliber, .22LR is also acceptable
- Red dots allowed; no magnified optics per DPS rules
- One magazine is enough, but two is better (not required)
- Speedloaders are permitted
- Use the largest pistol you shoot comfortably (or .22LR) for better accuracy and reduced felt-recoil
- If you are a novice shooter, please do NOT bring a compact or subcompact handgun unless you are very accurate with it.
📄 Certificate of Training
After completing the LTC class, you’ll receive a certificate valid for 2 years. It is your responsibility to submit it to TXDPS as part of your LTC application.
