Universal Firearms Safety Rules

These rules are to be utilized at the range, and more importantly in your daily life and apply to all firearms: pistol, rifles, carbines, shotguns, machine guns… makes no difference.

  • ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
This applies to every firearm you come across. Before handling, cleaning, inspecting, tinkering, or showing to a friend, first open the action and remove any live ammunition.
  • NEVER LET YOUR MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY
Always be conscious of where you muzzle is pointed. This rule is very easy to violate with handguns, but is vital with any sort of firearm. Do not carelessly point a gun at a person and when called out for it say “Its okay, it isn’t loaded.” See rule #1
  • KEEP YOUR FINGER OUT OF THE TRIGGER GUARD UNLESS YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
If this rule was the only one followed, most firearms accidents would be avoided. The weapon will not fire unless you touch the trigger, so if your sights are not on target, keep your finger off the trigger.
  • ALWAYS BE CERTAIN OF YOUR TARGET
While at the range shoot only at your designated target, easy enough. In your daily life do not shoot at shadows, at noises in the brush, or anything you cannot identify. Be sure that no innocents are in the line of your fire. Know what is beyond your target. There are worse things than being shot–one of them is shooting someone accidentally.
